Fans of the game can expect to witness their favourite football heroes engaging in some seriously competitive sport as they battle it out for the winning trophy. Over the past two years, players have demonstrated that winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing. With old team rivalries being reignited, the British Airways Football Legends Invitational is now known for its legendary players, high quality games and lush Caribbean backdrop.

This year’s tournament features eight, six-a-side teams representing Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Everton, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur from the English Premiership, plus a PFA all-star team and an all-star team representing the Caribbean.

As manager of Chelsea, Roberto Di Matteo steered the club to European and Domestic Cup success. Unfortunately such success did not translate onto the Barbados pitch in 2012, as for a second year running Manchester United scooped the winning trophy. The fierce competition and fantastic weather have drawn Di Matteo back to Barbados for a third year, and his team will attempt to knock Manchester United from the top spot.

Di Matteo will be joined by some of the greatest names in Chelsea’s history, including Dennis Wise, Gus Poyet and Gianfranco Zola. Other stars include Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole for Manchester United, Stephane Henchoz for Liverpool, Kevin Kilbane for Everton and Gaizka Mendieta for the PFA all-star team.

“We’re looking forward to giving visitors to Barbados and locals a great tournament.”

Ex-Chelsea and former England international player Dennis Wise is looking forward to returning to Barbados for a second year:

“We had a lot of fun last year – I loved the matches, the beaches and the restaurants on the island. We were of course disappointed to lose 4 – 3 in the final to Manchester United, so we’ve really got our eyes on the trophy this year! When you sign up for things like this, obviously you want to enjoy yourself, but when you get on the pitch you want to win, so we’re looking forward to giving visitors to Barbados and locals a great tournament.”

Join the legends on the trip and experience all that Barbados has to offer, from seemingly endless stretches of sandy beach joined by clear turquoise waters, to the island’s rich cultural heritage and warm Bajan hospitality.

(November 2012) Staged at the remarkable Kensington Oval, Barbados, the British Airways Football Legends Invitational Tournament 2013 will once again give football fans and sun-seekers alike the opportunity to witness legends of eight teams battle it out in a two-day event against the backdrop of the lush Caribbean island, from 7-8 June.

Since the launch of BA Football Legends in 2011, Manchester United have firmly positioned themselves as the success story of the event. In 2012, Dwight Yorke and Andrew Cole dazzled spectators as they overcame Premiership teams representing Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. New for 2012, a Caribbean All-Stars team joined the event and were a close contender for the winning trophy.

“The Beautiful Game returns to Barbados for its third year, 7-8 June”

Next year’s event will again comprise of eight, six-a-side teams including a talented PFA All-Stars team and a Caribbean All-Stars team along with representation for select Premiership teams.

The past two events have seen the likes of the Champion League winners’ manager Roberto Di Matteo, Alan Shearer, Gianfranco Zola, Gus Poyet and Gaizka Mendieta pack their boots for sunnier climes and 2013 is set for another stellar line-up of football talent. The tournament will once again attract a huge crowd of both British football fans visiting the country and local Bajans, who are just as avid in their support of the game.

Christian Smith, Commercial Director of the Professional Footballers’ Association comments on the partnership: “Thanks to the support of the Barbados Tourism Authority, we have now implemented, and are building upon, a concept that we had been developing for several years. We’re thrilled that the success of the inaugural Barbados Football Legends in 2011 was followed by another successful event in 2012, and we’re developing plans to ensure that 2013’s event attracts an even bigger crowd, further publicity and legendary players.

The profile that we’ve managed to achieve for veterans’ football is fantastic.”

Petra Roach, Vice President of the Barbados Tourism Authority UK added: “Attracting some of the greatest football players ever to have graced the English stage to our beautiful island is testimony to the warm reception and wonderful hospitality afforded by the people of Barbados. Football is huge in Barbados and to welcome such a fantastic line-up of Premiership heroes for a third year is an honour. ”

Player Gaizka Mendieta commented, “I’m really excited to be heading back to Barbados for the Legends tournament next year. It’s great to get everyone back on the pitch and renew old rivalries. Add to that the fantastic weather and welcoming, generous people and you have an event that I wouldn’t want to miss.”

Holiday packages and tickets will be available in early 2013.

A pop star on a pedalo? A showbiz celebrity at the shops? A footballer in a bar? You’re almost certain to bump into a big name if you take a break in balmy Barbados.

It is the sunshine retreat for the rich and famous, after all. Simon Cowell, Sir Cliff Richard, Cilla Black and local girl made good Rihanna all have homes here.

Pretty swanky ones, too, alongside the sun-kissed ocean in the exclusive St James area.

Inevitably, Read more

Pretty swanky ones, too, alongside the sun-kissed ocean in the exclusive St James area.

Inevitably, where there’s that kind of money, there’s everything to cater for that kind of lifestyle. Multi-million-pound yachts in the new marina, exclusive golf courses and hotels, top-name brands in the shops, the finest restaurants.

All of it under a golden Caribbean sun and against a backdrop of palm trees, pale yellow sand and an aquamarine ocean.

Big names … the BA Legends tournament

Trust me, it’s special — extra special if you’re a football fan jetting in during the month of May. That’s when some of the greatest names in the game gather here for the British Airways Legends tournament, a six-a-side challenge played out at the world-famous Kensington Oval cricket ground in the capital Bridgetown.

So just imagine strolling down the beach and spotting ex-England captain Alan Shearer soaking up some rays as he chats with old Newcastle United team-mates Steve Watson and Shaka Hislop.

Or spotting the legendary Gianfranco Zola taking a coffee with former Chelsea buddies Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink, Gus Poyet, Frank Leboeuf and Roberto Di Matteo.

And is that Dwight Yorke in the white baseball cap and shades, sipping a freshly-made fruit punch and laughing at Andrew Cole’s antics on a jet ski? It sure is.

League of its own … the Almond Casuarina Beach Resort Hotel

But hang on a minute, don’t even think about trying to take on Teddy Sheringham at cards as he relaxes in the shade with ex-Spurs men Darren Anderton and David Howells.

Teddy’s just getting ready for his next poker tournament, his new passion since finally ending a glittering soccer career that included spells at Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Millwall.

Quite a gathering of football folklore then, all in one place and all at one time.

A footie fest for fans, an autograph hunter’s dream and a wannabe WAG’s paradise.

The Almond Casuarina Beach Resort Hotel had never seen anything like it. Forget four stars, this was 50 stars all under the same roof.

And a jolly time was had by all at this superbly-situated beachfront hotel, especially if you were lucky enough to occupy one of the spacious rooms with a sea view over-looking the splendid bay. Great food, too. A wide-ranging choice of breakfasts to enjoy on the terrace, daily barbecues on the beach for lunch and excellent a la carte dining in the evening with the waves lapping on to the sand close by.

Legend … Gianfranco Zola

Don’t worry, though, if you can’t distinguish Wayne Rooney from Wayne Sleep or John Terry from Halle Berry.

If star-spotting’s not your style, there’s still endless scope for fun on the island.

You could just go to the beach, lie back on your sunbed and just chill every day — well OK maybe chill’s not the best word when it’s almost 90°F out there!

But that would be a shame because Barbados has so much more to offer than simply sun, sea and sand. There’s so much history and tradition here, not to mention stunning scenery.

So why not jump into a jeep for a safari of the island, from the breathtaking coastal roads to the dense forest in the hinterland.

Visit the old sugar plantation homes and travel back in time to the days when they were in full flow rather than museum pieces.

Take a trip around a nearby rum distillery and sample a drop or two of the local nectar, but be warned, go steady!

Especially if your next outing is going on one of the many boat trips that sail around the island. That’s a hell of a way to see the island from a completely different perspective.

Another great opportunity to have fun and see the island is on a Segway.

Don’t know what a Segway is? It’s what the security guy uses in the movie Mall
Cop.

Still not sure? Well it’s basically a motorised two-wheeler that you stand up to ride and control with the handlebars and your body. Lean and push forward (smoothly and gently!) to go forward, lean and pull back to move backwards.

It only takes about five minutes to master the machines and then the island is yours. And those Segways can’t half shift if you are a bit of a daredevil, boy-racer type.

Or you can go as smooth and slow as you like. Either way, it’s hours of fun and you get to explore at the same time. A real win-win scenario.

Which sums up Barbados, really.

It’s one of the very few places on the planet that really can be all things to all people.

So get out there and see for yourself.

Because if you can’t have the perfect holiday here, well there’s something wrong with you, not this idyllic island.

I am definitely going back — and the sooner the better. Now where did I put my mankini?

Football fans could be forgiven for feeling a little deprived at the moment – but they’d be overlooking a fantastic tournament taking place right here in Barbados.

With a line-up of household-name European stars from the recent past, the inaugural British Airways Football Legends Invitational Tournament takes place on June 10-11. Chelsea legends such as Roberto Di Matteo, Gianfranco Zola and Gus Poyet will be taking to the field alongside the likes of Manchester United’s Andy Cole and Jesper Blomqvist, Liverpool’s Mark Walters, Arsenal’s Anders Limpar and Blackburn’s Craig Hignett.

The six-a-side competition, at the Kensington Oval, will also feature teams representing Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle – including Alan Shearer – along with a Professional Footballers’ Association All-Star team.

Former Chelsea favourite Di Matteo said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to think that we will be lining up with and against some of the great players from our own era and in such a wonderful location.” Shearer, the former England captain, also anticipates an entertaining few days in the West Indies: “You can never take that competitive edge away from a footballer but the respect and friendship among all the lads will no doubt produce some great entertainment for the crowd too.

“I love Barbados. I have been going there for the past 15 to 20 years. I love the place, I love the people.”

The matches will last 20 minutes each and the order of the evening kick-offs for the preliminary rounds will be drawn like the FA Cup. Live entertainment will follow the final.

Funds raised will be donated to the National Sports Council Primary Schools Programme which develops youth football within primary schools and a healthy, disciplined and united society through greater participation and better opportunities in sport at all levels of society. The Barbados Football Association is also set to be a beneficiary with a proportion of the funding also going towards its Youth Development Programme.

While British Airways is the key sponsor, others include the Professional Footballers’ Association, The Almond Resorts, the Kensington Oval and the Apes Hill Golf Club.

The two-day tournament is the brainchild of the Barbados Tourism Authority’s vice-president Petra Roach, who said: “The buzz of excitement about this event has been going on for some time and it’s almost here. We’re thrilled to be working with the PFA on delivering this little slice of history to our great country. Football is huge in Barbados and to welcome such a fantastic line-up of Premier League heroes is an honour.”

She went on to state “What often fails to be reported is the fact that these gentlemen dedicate an inordinate amount of their time to raising substantial amounts of money for charities, both local and national. We look forward to seeing as many Bajan people at this event as possible.”

Taking place at the world famous Kensington Oval from June 10-11, iconic names such as Andrew Cole, Alan Shearer and Gianfranco Zola will be in action as eight teams do battle.

The two day football extravaganza is the idea of the Barbados Tourism Authority’s Vice President for Marketing and Sales UK, Petra Roach, who told the Voice of Sport:

"Attracting some of the greatest football players to have graced the English stage to our beautiful island is testimony to the warm reception and wonderful hospitality afforded by the people of Barbados."

The six-a-side tournament was created in conjunction with the Professional Football Association. The event is also sponsored by British Airways and co-sponsored by Almond Beach Resorts and Kensington Oval. Matches will be 20 minutes each. Day one will see first round matches while the second day will see the semifinals and final played. The aim is to create an annual cycle of events to help promote the game along with raising money for local charities involved in the development of football in the Caribbean.

Football is huge in Barbados, so the island is excited to welcome the impressive line-up of some of the great Premier League players of the past decade. Barbados is used to being a sports host and successfully boasts a number of world class events including several athletic championships, the ICC cricket World Cup finals and also the thrilling Twenty20 World Cup final staged last year.

Former Newcastle United and England captain Shearer is ecstatic to have been invited to take part in the tournament. “When I got asked I said ‘yes’ straight away. I said put me first on the list please! “I love Barbados. I have been going there for the past fifteen to twenty years. I love the place, I love the people, I was there only a few months ago.”

“It should be very entertaining, not saying we will be running around like we did ten years ago, but we will do our best!” The Premier League’s all-time top goal scorer has obviously not lost any of his winning instincts, when he added “Yes I do hope to win. If I don’t then so be it, because the people out there are so happy and relaxed, as long as we do our best and entertain, that’s what matters.” The legends teams will be: Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers and the PFA All-Stars.
